"Territory of İstanbul" is a video project that uses the terrestrial system of meridians and parallels in order to define the locations of the views taken.
We determine the lines of the parallels and meridians on a map of the historical centre of İstanbul, at intervals of 30”(seconds), forming a grid of 5 horizontal lines(from 41°0’0’’N to 41°2’0’’N) and 8 vertical lines (from 28° 55’30’’E to 28° 59’0’’E) thus creating 40 intersections.
The project consists in spotting the exact location of these 40 intersections and then go to the spot and realise every single time a slow panoramic zoom shot of 360°, showing the special character of each one of these 40 places: its environment, its liveliness, its sound surrounding … etc..
All of these sequences (around 1 min for each one of them) is finally gathered together in a interactive audiovisual program allowing to click on a map of İstanbul, (or just put the finger) on any intersection of the grid in order to visualise the short film.
This program may either be put on line on the inernet or be presented on a big screen in an exhibition.
Through these random choices, this approach aims to reveal an “objective” portrait of İstanbul, contrary to all the usual “subjective” views which are conditioned by the personal choices of the operator: cultural, esthetic, emotional etc..
In the course of time, each one of us has formed for himself a certain image of the city. Perhaps, this project will alow us to discover a new face of it.

“İstanbul Ülkesi”, görüntü alınacak yerleri belirlemek üzere karalar üzerine denk gelen meridyen ve paralellerden oluşan bir sistemin kullanıldığı bir video projedir.
İstanbul’un tarihsel merkezi planı üzerinde, aralarında 30”(saniye) olan 5 yatay(41°0’0’’N’den 41°2’0’’N’ye)ve 5 dikey(28° 55’30’’E’den 28° 59’0’’E’ye) çizgiden oluşan ve böylece 40 kesişme noktası oluşturan bir ızgara oluşturmaya karar verildi.
Proje, bu 40 kesişme noktasının tam olarak yerinin belirlenmesi ve her birinin özelliğini keşfetmek için çevresel, yaşamsal, işitsel vb ambiyansını ortaya koyacak 360°’lik yavaş ve panoramik bir yolculuk gerçekleştirilmesi üzerine kurulu.
Her biri yaklaşık 1 dakika olan bu sekanslar, kısa filmi görüntülemek için İstanbul haritasının üzerindeki bu ızgaradaki herhangi bir noktaya tıklanmak (veya dokunulmak) üzere geliştirilen interaktif bir audio-video programda bir araya getirildi. Bu program ayrıca, bir sergide büyük ekranda gösterilmek üzere İnternet’e de konulacak.
Çalışmanın amacı, bu ihtiyari seçimlerle, kültürel, estetik, duygusal vb. seçimlerine göre sanatçı tarafından belirlenmiş insanlardan oluşan alışılmış ve şartlandırılmış “sübjektif” İstanbul görüntüleri yerine, şehrin “objektif” bir portresini ortaya koymaktır.
Hepimiz, bugüne dek şehrin belirli bir görüntüsüyle kandırıldık. Bu projeyle ise onun yeni bir yüzünü görebiliriz…

« Territoire Istanbul » est un projet vidéo utilisant le système terrestre des méridiens et des parallèles pour définir les lieux des prises de vues.
Sur un plan du centre historique d’Istanbul on détermine, à intervalles de 30’’ (secondes), les lignes des parallèles et des méridiens, formant une grille de 5 lignes horizontales ( de 41°0’0’’N à 41°2’0’’N) et 8 lignes verticales ( de 28° 55’30’’E à 28° 59’0’’E) créant ainsi 40 intersections.
Le projet consiste à repérer le lieu exact de ces 40 intersections et à se rendre sur place pour réaliser chaque fois un lent traveling panoramique de 360° rendant compte du caractère de chacun de ces 40 lieux : son environnement, son animation, son ambiance sonore..etc.
L’ensemble de ces séquences (environ 1 minute chacune) est ensuite réuni en un programme audio-visuel interactif permettant, sur une carte d’Istanbul, de cliquer (ou des poser le doigt) sur n’importe quelle intersection de la grille pour en visionner le petit film.
Ce programme pourra aussi bien être mis en ligne sur internet que présenté sur grand écran dans une exposition.
Par ses choix arbitraires, cette démarche vise à dégager un portrait « objectif » d’Istanbul, en opposition à toutes les vues « subjectives» habituelles, conditionnées par les choix personnels de l’opérateur : choix culturels, esthétiques, émotionnels etc.
Chacun de nous, avec le temps, s’est forgé une certaine image de la ville, avec ce projet nous en découvrirons peut-être un nouveau visage.
